ANA CAROLINA  SAID:

"I’m tired of being the only one in the class at the university.".

For a long time I’ve noticed the large number of people criticizing the quota system for blacks in the universities. They say the system is dishonest because it doesn’t give opportunities to the poorest sector of the population. OK, these people think that the racial quota in universities guarantees an “advantage” to the individual black student over others; in truth, the quota has a much broader objective: it serves to equalize the academic arena racially. Today, principally in the best Brazilian universities, the academic population is overwhelmingly white. If blacks make up 53% of the population, why is this proportion also not the same in universities? I graduated from an elite university in São Paulo entering through the quota system of Prouni [“University Program for All”]. Of the 8 scholarships offered by the system, only one was destined for black students in the quota system, which I got. I got into a class with 60 students and I was the only black person.
